I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to remember an old woman, for the smiles, for your consideration, for your thoughtfulness. My husband has been dead for sixteen years, and the kids are scattered. Good to see you. With love and gratitude, Gert. Who can I serve?
The prayer of Saint Francis expresses this other-focused, ministry-oriented spiritual maturity so well. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal life.

The story is about a band of men on a mythical journey. The central figure of the story is Leo who accompanies the party as the servant who does their menial chores, but who also sustains them with his spirit and his song.

He is a person of extraordinary presence. All goes well until Leo disappears. Then the group falls into disarray and the journey is abandoned. Eventually the narrator, one of the group of men, is taken into the religious Order that sponsored the journey and there he discovers that Leo, whom he had known first as servant, was in fact the head of the Order, its guiding spirit, a great and noble leader.
The story says that the great leader is seen as servant first, and that fact is the key to his or her greatness. This was true of Jesus and of others like Mother Teresa who led like Jesus did. Suffering will continue to mean little, and to hurt much, for the one who has not made this decision.
The Power of One Christlike Life
In this encounter, the one true God is revealed in His enfleshed Word. And the humanity of Jesus discloses His divinity. The basis of their existence is not the infinity of space, but the here.
Not the boundlessness of the world, but the now. And the content of fruitful action is not the endless that can be accomplished but that which vocation and situation require. If human beings are satisfied with this demand, a conversion takes place.
Those who do justice to their own situation find therein the whole given to them. History, also, becomes not the inevitable working out of progressive triumph Hegel , or of what are ultimately meaningless individual human lives Sartre. Rather, history is the field of action in which God continuously works to reveal Himself and summon man to a new life, and in which people must make a choice to accept the revelation of God and His Kingdom made present in Jesus Christ, surrendering themselves in lives of self-sacrificial love.
Failure to do so results in suffering stripped of redemptive meaning. The true Christian disciple, in turn, radiates that love outward towards a suffering world, marked by sin and death.
